Are we only as healthy as … How Well We Eliminate Waste … from our bodies?

Detoxification is critical to the success or every healing program.  Since we are bombarded by environmental intoxicants 24/7 both from inside our homes, to the products we lather onto our skin, the food we eat and the air we breathe. Our bodies play host to an accumulation of herbicides, heavy metals, xeno-estrogens, all of which can be a big part in why those with chronic health issues are chronically ill. 

What I and other nutritionists/naturopathic physicians have found, is the strong correlation between those who are most sick and those who have had the most significant exposures, and are unable to detoxify so well.

Therefore, I believe educating ourselves about environmental toxins is critical.  And this can then translate into making better choices for our health, the health of our families, and it helps our planet also. Why? Because the substances that are hurting our bodies, by and large, affect our planet through climate change too. 

I consider toxins to be the number underlying causes of chronic diseases today, but sadly the doctors are NOT looking for this. It is my firm belief that when people are sick there is ALWAYS an underlying root cause.

Heavy metals and the brain

We also have a great deal of science and a strong correlation between the toxic loading of certain heavy metals and neuro-degenerative diseases.  Therefore keeping our brains as well as bodies free from toxic levels of heavy metals is paramount when supporting neurological health 

It’s hard to know exactly what heavy metal content exists within each of our brains unless we dissect the actual brain after passing.  However, we are able to measure heavy metal burden released into the urine when challenged by a sulphur donation agent.   Signifying theoretical total body burden in terms of reasonable or unreasonable levels excreted via this drainage pathway when challenged.  (The DMSA Challenge Test has been mentioned within a previous post.) 

But firstly let’s talk about the Glymphatic System and what we do know about how this protects our brain. The glymphatic system was only recently discovered within the University of Virginia in the US.


What is the Glymphatic System?

The Glymphatic System clears metabolic waste from the brain.  It does this at night during the hours when we are asleep.   First, at night the brain shrinks by 60% of its size in order to make room for the flow of the lymph (Glymphatic System) around it. 

Lymph flows along the arteries, bathing our neurons with nutrients whilst removing metabolic waste and then flows along the veins before exiting.  A vital system for health which is protected by good amounts of sleep each night.  

Unfortunately, not everyone has a healthy functioning Gymphatic System. As it is easily compromised when challenged by toxicity such as heavy metals, but brain injuries can also damage this system. 

Clearly, a damaged Glymphatic System can become a chicken and egg scenario since heavy metals damage the Glymphatic System, which in turn a compromises our ability to detoxify heavy metals.

If an individual is predisposed to carrying an increased toxicity load of heavy metals, predisposed by their genetic makeup, and then experiences a brain injury this can be a very tough situation indeed.  When this set up arises, every attempt to live a clean life, integrating detoxification techniques on a regular basis with good quality sleep also critical to this cleansing system.  Since we know that brain injuries incur an increased risk of neurological issues.


LEAD & GABA

We know that lead can be stored in the bone, as lead diametrically opposes calcium and therefore increments bone loss (post to follow), but it also interferes in our GABA production too.  As a result, a chemical known as Amyloid Beta accumulates when the Glymphatic system is not working well, causing incremental neuro-degeneration.

GABA regulates how well the lymph can flow in and out of the brain.  Therefore it is critical to our cleansing system.


MERCURY

Exposure to mercury in the mouth also has negative effects on the Glymphatic system. Over time the vapour gets taken up into the brain from the mouth.  There is a retrograde effect as it gets into the nerves, and then to the brain, damaging astrocytes.  This can be an appalling insult to the Glymphatic system and its optimal functioning.


SLEEP

When facing toxicity challenges sleep becomes all the more important. Sleep is therefore paramount in terms of reducing susceptibility to all neuro-degenerative conditions.   We absolutely need to sleep in order for this system to work. Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, secreted to help us have a restful deep sleep. But it also helps to cleanse our brains. I love to take a slow releasing or sub-lingual form of melatonin before I sleep.  It is neuroprotective anti-oxidant clearing mercury, lead, viruses, etc from the brain.


MELATONIN

Taking a step back, think about why we may have reduced melatonin?

Legally, we are not allowed to sell/buy melatonin in the UK, therefore apart from purchasing it from our US friends overseas, let’s look at what else can we do to support our melatonin levels naturally. 

Our love of technology exposes us to un-natural amounts of blue light from our phones and ipads, laptops, etc.  Blue light is the same as sunlight, which inhibits melatonin production. 

Realistically, we need to minimise blue-light once the sun goes down.  To support this there are screensavers with blue light blocker and amber glasses which also block out blue-light.  By reducing blue-light after sun-down we are naturally supporting our bodies to produce melatonin in the way it is meant to.

Melatonin in pill form

Melatonin in pill form is sold readily in the US, but as mentioned not legally in the UK.  There are brands however that will ship overseas. Source Naturals and Allergy Research for instance.

Pills will need to be processed by the liver and the digestive tract before it is absorbed.  Which works for some people, but for those who are sick, this is not ideal, since they typically have compromised digestion.

Liposomal melatonin is bound up with phosphatidyl choline. Phos choline is an essential-fat that our brains are made up of.  Therefore this is the perfect delivery system, we can harness this to get melatonin into our system and therefore brain more readily.


Setting the Bedroom Environment

  • The bedroom should ideally be EMF free. Meaning that all electronics need to be outside the bedroom.
  • Install Blackout blinds or shutters.
  • Keep the bedroom free from glues, hairsprays, and hormone-altering chemicals

Consider using Liposomal GABA and Liposomal Melatonin prior to sleeping, to support Glymphatic cleansing.


The Anti-Diuretic-Hormone (ADH)

Those with high mercury content in their bodies often have ADH (90%).  Which can be lowered easily with a drug provided from your GP.  Although I am not a huge fan of pharmacology, there is a place for using some drugs in the short term.

Those with high levels of ADH wake up in need of a pee.  The second point is to address electrolytes. Recommended products for this: E-Lyte from Allergy Research, Ocean 72 from Concentrace, and Crystal Energy from Patrick Flanigan.

Then, take a look at what is down-stream from the brain.  Do you get chronic sinusitis? And/or tonsillitis? There may have been a history of chronic Strepp?

When tonsils are removed, this leaves scars, causing stress on the nerve centre which is the Superior Sympathetic Ganglian.  The Superior Sympathetic Ganglian regulates blood flow to the pineal. Which if scarred can lead to chronic insomnia due to an interruption of blood flow both to and from the brain.


Taking it one step further

It is one thing to identify whether you have a heavy metal burden, but quite another to be Sensitive to Heavy Metals!’

This can happen too!

Our immune systems are now literally reacting to heavy metals. What this means is that not only our total body burden is an issue, but that our immune system now reacts to even the tiniest amount.  We are now hyper-sensitive to metals and therefore have an allergy.

This is a type 4 allergic reaction. When T-Lymphocites recognise and allergenic molecule in our system causing inflammation.

Common metal allergens are nickel, gold, mercury, and titanium.  Typically those who are allergic to nickel cannot wear it within their jewelry.  Nickel is within a lot of dental work, usually the origin of such an allergy.

There is various testing that can be completed to assess allergenic responses to metals.  I prefer to use Cyrex Array 11  Chemical Immune Reactivity Screen.

Lyme & the three shields: a co-dependant ecosystem

“It’s never JUST the ONE THING when we have a chronic health condition”

LYME

There is a big link between heavy metal loading as a protective mechanism, as a shield, primarily within the biofilm world.

Lyme, is a complex organism, in the sense that it takes on different forms.  It morphs, bio-transforms, which makes it more elusive.  It’s slow replicating.  It can hide out for a while, and protect itself.

Lyme has all kinds of mechanisms, it’s got the spiral-shaped form (spirochete).  That drills, burrowing into joints and tissues and organs, which is so often while conventional lab tests are checking the blood don’t find Lyme because the target organ of Lyme is not the blood.

Then there is a Cyst form of Lyme.  Essentially when you take antibiotics the bacteria sense this and within twenty minutes the Lyme has turned into a round cyst form to protect itself.  This is about a thousand times stronger against antibiotics in a cyst form than when it’s active spirochete form.  Making it a hard beast to kill!!

And then there is the intra-cellular form, where it goes inside the cells, which is subsequently responsible for the auto-immune relationship between Lyme and our immune system.  As our body attacks the Lyme inside our cells other cells are also attacked because our immune system is not clear on its target.

And then there is a fourth form of Lyme, which is Biofilm. Biofilm is yet another protective mechanism.  It’s a shield so that when you’re taking herbs or when you’re taking antibiotics, it’s less likely that you’re going to be able to penetrate the Biofilm.

Essentially, if you put all the Lyme forms together into a colony, plus other pathogens and fungus, and then lay a blanket on top then you’ve got the Biofilm all wrapped up in one.

The link between Heavy Metals and Biofilm is the ingredients Biofilm is made up of the following: Magnesium, calcium, copper, iron, mercury, and lead. Essentially unless the toxicity is dealt with it’s unlikely the Lyme will be dealt with also.

Where does testing for Lyme fit in?

It is well known that testing for Lyme via a regular panel can show false negatives Labs can run into issues that influence results.  The advice is to use as many TOOLS as possible. Energetic biofeedback machines are tools, kinesiology is a tool, looking at a client’s history is a tool.  It is when the Art each practitioner has developed through their tool matches up with lab result this then creates a stronger indicatory rather than just one thing.

Lyme should always be considered when complex health conditions are present. To include Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, or autoimmune conditions such as RA, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus.

As previously mentioned, one of the reasons Lyme is so elusive is due to using a protective mechanism such as heavy metals as a shield.


The three shields: a co-dependant ecosystem (PARASITES  / HEAVY METAL / MOULD)

1. PARASITES

Parasites is a modern day epidemic.  There are 134 species of parasites.  And Lyme disease can live inside a parasite.  So if you have Lyme disease and you have parasite issues then you’re not going to get to that Lyme bacteria if it’s within the parasite.  First, go after the parasites.

We all have parasites to one degree or another, which can take more than a month to eliminate when taking the correct herbs Ascaris lumbricoides (a type of roundworm) right down to pinworm.  There is usually a sequence with the elimination of the larger ones first.  Parasites have a 2-week replication cycle, affected by the waxing and waning of the moon.  So you can see improvements but then there’s another wave, so the rule of thumb is to be consistent and persistent.

2. HEAVY METALS

Heavy metal toxicity is a modern day epidemic.  Mercury from tuna, fillings or vaccinations.  Lead and arsenic from rice harvested in China, lead from older water pipes. Cadmium from our soil too. Aluminium is off the charts too.

It’s a big issue, one which we are all encountering since we share one earth, one atmosphere the fundamental truth is that we are all affected.

Riding the body from heavy metals helps to peel away the biofilm and release the pathogens which can be a very good thing – ultimately.  However, by the same token, the health of the individual is key as to whether they will become over-whelmend by this process and become sicker before their health improves.  Heavy metals should be the second detoxification after parasites.

3. MOULD

Mould will also act as a shield to Lyme.  Therefore if you are living in a mouldy house it doesn’t matter what treatment is used, the source of mould needs to be removed if you are going to get well.  The third and last protective mechanism is that needs to be addressed is mould.

Once we have addressed parasites, heavy metals and mould there are no great defense mechanisms for the Lyme to hide in, making it far easier to clean up by assisting the immune system to take care of Lyme.


DRAINAGE VERSES DETOX

When wishing to Detox it is vital to prepare the ground with Drainage support first.

When our Drainage systems are not working adequately the body can easily get thrown into over-whelm during a detox.  Especially when detoxifying parasites and heavy metals.

This, of course, depends on the genetic profile of the individual.  When individuals are pre-disposed genetically to oxidative stress and inflammation, then challenges attributed to detoxification will be increased.

Definition of Detox: pulling out of chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, glyphosates, herbicides, radiation.

Definition of Drainage: pathways of detoxification not working adequately, and therefore leading to a backing up of toxic release from the system.

Example of Drainage issues that need to be addressed PRIOR to Heavy Metal Chelation and parasite cleansing:

Leaky Gut is a drainage issue. When constipated it’s the draining pathways clogged. The kidney is a draining pathway. The liver bile duct is one of the most important draining pathways in the whole mix. The lymphatic system is draining pathways. The glymphatic or the brain lymphatic system, the skin.  Keeping all these pathways clear and healthy during detox will help to minimise symptoms. Making sure you prepare the body and then focus on drainage during the detox is key.

Parasites often clog up the liver bile duct area.  Certain parasites love the liver bile duct-like strongyloides and flukes residing there and clogging it up.  Killing off parasites is a part of opening up the drainage pathways, hence why it is the first step in breaking down the three shields. Elimination of parasites is also a fundamental step within a heavy metal detox regardless of whether Lyme is present. Both Heavy Metals and Mould spore can live inside parasites since parasites are hungry for both.

Liver

Optimising the liver and gall-bladder via bile excretion is paramount. All toxins leave via the bile duct. Draining off ammonia can be a game-changer for some health conditions.  Which also relies upon the Liver/Bile-duct working properly.

A clogged Liver automatically slows down and clogs the lymphatic system, which affects the brain-draining system, the glymphatic system.

  • Consider coffee enemas (see blog on enemas)

  • Castor oil packing

  • Liver / Gallbladder flushes

  • Milk thistle in with your coffee if you’re a coffee drinker

  • Dandelion root coffee

  • Chanca Piedra, herbal assistance

  • Carbon, charcoal or clay for the gut

5 Healthy Daily Habits

1.  Go to bed at 9pm

2.  Commit to NO BLUE LIGHT from computer screens or phones past sun-down. And when you do, wear amber glasses to block out the light.

3.  Have your last meal 3 hours before bedtime

4.  Break your fast more than 12 hours after your last meal, with a protein Break-Fast

5.  BREATH. Practice breathing OUT twice as long as you breathe IN. This way you positively engage the parasympathetic nervous system. Allowing your body to heal naturally.


GO TO BED AT 9PM

ALTHOUGH ACTION-ING THIS IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS, IT’S WORTH KNOWING THAT OUR BODIES HAVE THEIR OWN AGENDA AND CONDITIONS WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH.  IF YOU ARE NOT ACTUALLY GETTING TO BED BY 9PM, BE SURE YOU DON’T STAY UP IN FRONT OF YOUR COMPUTER.

WHICH BRINGS US TO THE SECOND POINT.


BLUE LIGHT & SLEEP

LIGHT FROM THE THE BLUE END OF THE SPECTRUM IS NATURAL AND COMES FROM SUNSHINE. HOWEVER, COMPUTER SCREENS, IPADS, FLAT-SCREENS, LED LIGHTING AND SMARTPHONES ALSO ALL EMIT LARGE AMOUNTS OF BLUE LIGHT.  

RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT ALL LIGHT TOWARDS THE BLUE END OF THE SPECTRUM IS ESPECIALLY EFFECTIVE AT KEEPING YOU AWAKE BECAUSE IT SUPPRESSES THE PRODUCTION OF THE SLEEP-INDUCING HORMONE MELATONIN.

THEREFORE TIME SPENT WITH GADGETS BEFORE BEDTIME TRICKS THE PINEAL GLAND INTO STILL BELIEVING THAT IT IS STILL DAYTIME. 

IDEALLY, SWITCH GADGETS OFF AT LEAST 2 HOURS BEFORE BEDTIME.


PREPARE YOUR LAST MEAL EARLY, AND THEN EAT 3 HOURS PRIOR TO BEDTIME AT THE LATEST

THIS GIVES YOUR BODY THE RECOMMENDED 12 HOURS FASTING PERIOD REQUIRED. 

DURING THE NIGHTTIME HOURS YOUR BODY SHOULD IDEALLY BE EMPTY ENOUGH TO CARRY OUT A SEMI DETOX DURING THE HOURS WHEN YOU SLEEP.  BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 1-3 AM OUR LIVER (THE GRAND-PARENT ORGAN) COMES INTO ACTION AND WORKS VERY HARD CLEANING-HOUSE! WHEN WE HAVE EATEN CLOSE TO BEDTIME, WE ARE UNABLE TO CLEANSE OUR BODIES ADEQUATELY, AND CAN EVEN WAKE THE FOLLOWING MORNING FEELING DRUNK AND SQUEEZY FROM THE FERMENTATION IN OUR GUTS. 


BREAK-FAST 12 HOURS AFTER YOUR LAST MEAL WITH A PROTEIN BREAKFAST

AFTER 12 HOURS OUR BODIES WILL HAVE HAD THE TIME TO CLEANSE ADEQUATELY. THEN STARTING OUR DAY WITH A PROTEIN BREAKFAST PROVIDES THE BODY WITH THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO STRENGTHEN THE LIVER AND AID LIVER PERFORMANCE. IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A LARGE BREAKFAST, EVEN NUT BUTTERS WITH PROTEIN POWDERS, BERRIES AND YOGHURT MAKE A GOOD, HIGH PROTEIN YET BALANCED BREAKFAST. 


BREATH 

BREATHING EXERCISES HAVE THE POWER TO RESTORE HEALTH ON THEIR OWN.

AT THE MORE EXTREME END OF THE SPECTRUM WE CAN TAKE ICE-MAN (FOR EXAMPLE), WHO HAS ACHIEVED BEYOND HUMAN POTENTIAL THOUGH BREATHING EXERCISES ALONE.

FOR US REGULAR FOLK, A REALLY GOOD BREATHING EXERCISE IS TO BREATH OUT TWICE AS LONG AS YOUR BREATH IN AND TO DO THIS FOR 7 MINUTES.  THIS ENGAGES THE PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS, WHILST SYSTEM REDUCING STRESS HORMONES AND SIGNALLING IN THE BODY PRESENT WHEN WE ARE SYMPATHETIC DOMINANT (FIGHT & FLIGHT) .

DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING ENGAGES THE DIAPHRAGM DURING THE BREATH.  YOU CAN PRACTICE DIAPHRAGMATIC BREATHING BY PLACING YOUR HAND ON THE STOMACH AREA, WHILST WATCHING THE STOMACH EXTEND AS THE BREATH IS DRAWN DOWN TO THE BASE YOUR LUNGS. WHEN YOU BREATH OUT, THE STOMACH GOES FLAT.
